Solar Magick: Conjuring the Sun
66What About the Sun?
Many Neo-Pagan traditions revere the receptive or “female” Creative Spirit through the worship and conjuration of the moon, a deified symbol of the “feminine” Creative Spirit or “The Goddess” in Wiccan theology. Otherworldly and luminous, the moon possesses an extensive history of mysticism, occultism, psychic influence and cryptic depths of knowledge awaiting discovery. Then, of course, there’s always that brilliant amassment of assertive energy, commonly engendered as “male” and deified as the embodiment of the “The God” in Wiccan mythology. Literature intended to foster one’s pursuit of Pagan or Wiccan spiritual exploration often neglects to mention or adequately address another power of paralleling immensity – the sun.
The sun’s precedence over life is demonstrated by the simple fact that the existence(s) of earth and all other planets within its transitory encompassment cannot exist without solar nurturance. It is the sun we can thank for the improvement of our health as much as we can scorn its (possibly deadly) ultra-violet inflictions for burning our bodies. Solar power is capable of providing the earth an unlimited supply of electricity as well as influencing life in an inconceivable multitude of ways. Therefore, it is easy to rationalize that the omnipotence of the sun’s power in magickal workings would be just as stunning, possessing an equal capacity to uplift spirits, brighten days and materialize desires as much as it can destroy worlds.
The Brightest Star in the Sky
How it Works
Unlike the ever-changing moon, the sun remains in one astrological sign for a longer duration of time and reaches the pinnacle of its power once a day, allowing the entire spectrum of its magickal energies to be harvested on a more frequent basis. Some witches/magicians speculate that the overall fruition of solar-based spells occurs at an expedited rate, demonstrating the sun’s ability to fuel spells for which the caster desires a quicker manifestation. If you compare the rate at which the moon’s phases change to the speed at which the sun completes its cycle, these speculations are perfectly conceivable.
The functionality of the sun’s daily motions is correlative to the cyclical waxing, peaking and waning of the moon. Sunrise corresponds to waxing energy, useful for “positive” magick that involves acquiration, attraction and expansion. When the sun reaches the mid-day peak of its power, the potency of its energies are akin to those of the full moon. Sunset is best for “negative” magickal workings which are conducted for the expressed purpose of diminishment or banishment. If gender labels prove to be an encumbrance to the success of your magickal operations, a significant plurality of sun goddesses exist if you wish to work with solar energy while still embracing the “female” Creative Spirit or a specific female deity
In conclusion...
The sun can enrich your magick and life with an abundance of energies which are often “overshadowed” by that radiant pearl in the night sky. Sunshine extends enlightenment unto all in the most literal sense of the word. Embracing the brilliance of the sun and its enlivening empowerment can benefit all aspects of your being by enhancing your attunement to nature and Divinity. Let there be light!

I think about this topic all the time. It is amazing that all of the other planets in the galaxy rely on one bright star for light. Interesting.
